Today's flower of the day is......

......Lobelia

Lobelia is a firm favourite with elderly people aged over 40. The senior generation seem to have a love for Lobelia like no one else and it is rumoured this has something to do with its medical capabilities. Not to be confused with a Lobster you should never eat this delightful bloom. Also known as ‘Pukeweed’ and ‘Vomitwort’ I’m sure you can gather what will happen if you eat too large a quantity. When sat in the sun drinking neat Gin it may seem very tempting to grab a handful of Lobelia and consume it. But be warned, eating more than a few mouthfuls can lead to dizziness, intense sweating, severe nausea and possibly sudden death.
Within a controlled environment Lobelia can be used to ease skin irritations, asthmatic symptoms and coughs by thinning the thick and putrid phlegm you probably have in your mouth at the moment. As older people (40+) are constantly losing balance and stumbling over it can be useful to have a handful of Lobelia nearby to rub on their buttocks in case they land in a bush of Poison Ivy.
It’s a hardy flower which can thrive in either sunny or partially shaded areas and comes in either trailing or upright form. It loves plenty of water, prefers well-drained soil and looks scintillating in a hanging basket. Whilst it can look almost weed like prior to full bloom your persistence will be rewarded with an explosion of mystical love and colour. Lobelia looks splendid in a pot, flower bed or rockery and the assortment of colour and fragrance will leave your pathetic little mind bewildered.
Next time you are drunk in your local garden nursery viciously quarrelling with loved one’s about whether to go for upright or trailing Lobelia take a timeout.REMEMBER: Although trailing Lobelia is beautiful, if you happen to walk under a hanging basket containing this beauty, brushing your foolish face across the trailing little gems and accidently eat multiple mouthfuls in the process you will probably croak it. This said, if you are in your garden on your own participating in a sack race and lose balance whilst taking a huge swig of Whisky and skid and land face first in an upright Lobelia bush, go unconscious and awaken with Lobelia between your teeth you will also probably perish. Probably best to go for both to counterbalance one and other. It’s unlikely you will brush your face across trailing Lobelia, eat 12 mouthfuls and then immediately skid and land face first into an upright Lobelia eating another 12 mouthfuls in the process.
